Apparently sold only via mail order, and although much too large to be considered as pocket-size, with its large screen and keyboard, the Zeos Pocket PC (PPC) is a very useful and convenient MS-DOS based palmtop computer.

Running on just two "AA" batteries, the PPC runs Microsoft MS-DOS 5.0, which is built-into the system ROM, so no valuable RAM memory is wasted. And since the RAM memory is battery-backed, the systems remembers previous data, and returns to the same application from when last shutdown.

Microsoft Works, the Microsoft home productivity software suite, is built-in, as is a custom Personal Information Manager (PIM) software interface. Other applications include File Management, Planner (calendar), ToDo List, Card File (contacts), Calculator, and File Transfer.

The PPC maps the two PCMCIA expansion slots as drives A: and B:, and accepts most type-1 PCMCIA memory cards.

The built-in 512KB ROM is mapped as drive C:, another 1MB ROM as drive D:. These hold the MS-DOS operating system, Microsoft Works, and the other built-in application.

An internal 384KB battery-backed "RAM disk" is mapped as drive E: by the operating system.

Reportedly, identical systems were released as the Prolinear PS-1000, Peacock Palmtop PC, and Spectrum P2000.

Two years earlier, in 1990, the smaller Poqet PC was released with MS-DOS 3.3 in ROM. It has no built-in apps, and cost three times as much.

The even smaller still Hewlett-Packard 95LX was released one year earlier in 1991. It was a collaboration between HP and Lotus, and has Lotus 1-2-3 built-in.

ZEOS INTRODUCES NEW 1.3 POUND PALMTOP PC;
VOLUME SHIPMENTS OF $595 PC SET TO BEGIN
ST. PAUL, Minn., June 24, 1992 /PRNewswire/

Zeos International, Ltd. (NASDAQ-NMS: ZEOS) today announced a new ultra light weight PC weighing only 1.3 pounds and offering 10 hours of battery life under continuous use. Delivery is schedule to begin within 30 days with prices starting as low as $595.

The new ZEOS Pocket PC is one of the most fully featured light weight PCs presently available. Measuring approximately 9-1/2" x 4-1/2" x 1" the new system comes bundled with eight different software programs including Microsoft DOS 5.0 and Microsoft Works featuring spreadsheet, word processing, database, file transfer and communications programs. The $595 model features 1 megabyte (MB) of Random Access Memory (RAM) and 1.5 MB of Read Only Memory (ROM). Two additional built-in PCMCIA slots enable the system to accept memory cards which accommodate additional software or system data storage.

The Zeos Pocket PC offers 10 hours of continuous battery operation and up to 30 days of operation in suspend mode. Its 81 key keyboard utilizes the industry standard "QWERTY" format with 12 function keys, embedded numeric keypad and special-function hot keys to instantly access pre-selected software windows. The keyboard is designed to be used for touch typing rather than the "hunt and peck" method required by the keyboards on competing products.

In addition to an easy-to-use keyboard, the Zeos Pocket PC features a video display system larger and easier to read than many similar products. Measuring a full 7" x 2-3/4", the adjustable non-glare screen offers 640 x 200 resolution (80 columns x 25 lines). With 16 scales of gray, the STN LCD screen features 0.27 x 0.33 dot pitch for easy-to-read graphics.

Data communications with the Zeos Pocket PC are provided through an optional send/fax modem enabling users to communicate worldwide via facsimile or modem over regular telephone lines. The system also features Input and Output (I/O) ports which enable the user to connect to any industry standard serial or parallel port devices such as printers or Local Area Network (LAN) adaptors.

"We have targeted the new Zeos Pocket PC to compete directly with competitors' product offerings such as the Hewlett Packard 95LX," said Greg Herrick, president of Zeos International.

"This product is designed to offer an extremely light weight, powerful and easy-to-use solution for those looking for maximum portability and battery life. In addition, our research shows there are large numbers of potential customers who want the benefits of portable computing, including the ability to do word processing and spreadsheet work plus communicate by modem but don't want to carry heavier notebook style systems. The Zeos Pocket PC hits the bulls-eye," said Herrick.

"This new 1.3 pound Zeos Pocket PC fits our corporate transportable system strategy perfectly. Combined with the new Zeos Color Notebook introduced earlier this month, it is one more step in making Zeos the one-stop source for everyone's transportable system needs. After all, Zeos has built a very strong reputation in this product category. As an example in a recent survey by PC World magazine, notebook computer owners chose the Zeos Notebook 386 as 'number one' in overall satisfaction beating companies such as Compaq, AST, Toshiba, TI and others.

"In PC Magazine's recent '1992 Service and Reliability Survey' notebook users were asked to rate companies on overall notebook reliability, likelihood of buying again, repair services and technical support. As PC Magazine said in their May 26, 1992 issue, 'Only Zeos's portable PCs achieved significantly higher-than-average ratings in all four categories.' Clearly customers like to buy transportable computers from Zeos," Herrick noted.

Zeos International, Ltd., manufactures and markets, direct to end users, industry standard personal computer systems and workstations worldwide under the Zeos name. In 1991, Zeos International, Ltd., was named "America's Fastest Growing Company" by Fortune magazine.
