Hello,
I'd like to formally announce the new Vintage Computer and Gaming Marketplace located at http://marketplace.vintage-computer.com
This new addition to http://www.Vintage-Computer.com will hopefully grow to become the preferred venue for buying and selling vintage computing and gaming gear on the net.
The software used for the marketplace was chosen for its simplicity and features which make it a viable alternative to the other, more generalized, auction and sales venues on the web.
Items can be posted in auction format (buy-it-now can be used for flat-rate sales) with descriptions and a photo gallery for each. Bids on items within the last two minutes of an auction will extend that auction by 30 minutes, making sniping a thing of the past.
NOTE: There are absolutely no charges for posting listings to the marketplace or for buying items listed there. The venue is completely free!
I believe that the popularity of the Vintage Computer Forums and the Vintage-Computer.com site will help drive buyers and sellers to the new marketplace to the benefit of the entire vintage computing and gaming community.
I encourage anyone interested or potentially interested in buying or selling vintage computing and/or gaming gear to please visit the new site, sign up and, by all means, tell your friends!
Thank you,

Looking at the side-bar list, missing is the Heathkit H89, which was available in kit form in 1980? 1981? I believe it had an Intel 8088 processor, 16K of memory and ran a precursor to CP/M called HDOS (for Heath operating system). This all-in-one unit had an exceptionally nice keyboard and was supplanted by the Z-100, sans monitor, which ran either HDOS or CP/M. "PIP *.*" Anyone?
I had both, and with the Z-100 I used 2 8 inch floppys.

I have an old Ferguson Big Board system (similar to Xerox 820) that I would like to find a good home for... it is installed in a metal case with two 8" DSDD drives (as I recall). Includes a Heath/Zenith 12" monitor, a homebrew keyboard, and a 5.25" floppy disk drive adapter board, and lots of floppies. I've got CP/M-80, Wordstar, Ecosoft C, DR PL/I, and probably a few utilities on the floppies. I haven't fired it up in a few years, but it worked the last time I checked. It's heavy (60 lbs?!), so local pickup is preferred; if someone wants it shipped they'll have to pay for that (and it won't be cheap!). Also, I might be able to make copies of some of the disks for other enthusiasts, assuming that it still boots. I found no reference to the Oric-1 and Oric Atmos computers. About the same era as ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64 but succesfully combined the advantages of both (correct keyboard, good BASIC, good sound and graphics). As far as I know, it was rather popular in the UK. Google for it, you'll find references.
Also, the Swedish ABC-80 is also lacking. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ABC_80 .

Hi,
I've just spent a couple of hours browsing through this great site, but the real reason i'm here is that I'm having a clearout and have rediscovered my 2 Osborne OCC 1 portable computers.
These are the 'facelifted' version and have 2 x Double Density 5.25 Floppy drives and 5inch grey screen. I have 1 set of the orginal Osborne Diskettes - CP/M System & Utility, WORDSTAR/MAILMERGE, DBASE II (on two diskettes), SUPERCALC, CBASIC/MBASIC, and DIAGNOSTICS 2.00. There are also 5 other backup/work disks.
One of the systems is in perfect working order, complete and pretty much unmarked for it's age (25+ years old) the other isn't working, I seem to remember one Diskette drive failed to read last time it was fired up, and it now doesn't seem to power up at all, this one alos has door missing from the the powerr connection and both the brigfhtness and contrast knobs are missing - though they may turn up in a box somewhere.
Both have what looks to be an optional External Monitor connection - EXMON ??
What I don't have are any manuals.
So, Any ideas on what these are worth - taking note of the fact I am in the UK, and they are heavy !
Thanks,
Graham

Hi,I recently inherited a vintage laptop computer, the Epson HX-20. It seems to be in perfect condition, either it was not used much or very well taken care of. It comes with the optional built-in micro cassette recorder, the original 6 Volt adaptor and brown plastic carrying case.
After some searching on the internet, I have come to the conclusion, that I have something of value, since it is considered the first laptop computer. Please let me know what a fair value for this item might be. I am interested in selling it to someone, who will appreciate its worth as a collector's item or to someone who might still enjoy using it.
Thank you in advance for your input or interest.

Just a quick note on a few things that might be of interest on the Atari 520ST page. First off, when the 520ST came out, it had a larger brother. The Atari 1040ST, with 1MB of RAM and a built in 3.5" floppy drive. Later on Atari introduced the 520STFM and 1040STFM. These were basically improved versions of the basic ST architecture. As with their standard, the 520STFM has 512K of RAM and the 1040 had a full MB. Both the 520STFM and the 1040STFM had one internal 3.5" floppy drive and a proprietary port to plug in a second one in the back. Also the FMs had built in Frequency Modulators to run their video directly to a TV set. Additionally, both machines could run Macintosh software using a device called a Mac-In-Sac. This basically used Apple Mac OS ROM chips, in the device, to bypass the built in TOS/GEM OS of the Atari. In effect it turned it into an approximately 85% compatable Mac clone. To further increase usability, you could also get one of several PC emulators to use PC compatible (x86/DOS) software on the PC. The most popular of these was called PC-Ditto. The largest incentive to buy an ST however was of particular interest to musicians. The STs had a fully compatable set of MIDI ports built into every model. And some of the best Midi sequencing software on the market at the time was written for the ST. One more thing, near the end, Atari also produced the Mega ST series. these were basically suped up STs with a lot of additional memory. The Mega ST 4 had a whopping 4MB of RAM, which was pretty amazing in that day and age.
I hope this helps.

I have an Epson HX-20 in full working order, with the brown case, charger, a number of Basic programs, a ROM module, the two standard handbooks, and Hartnell's book 'Making the most of your HX20'. It is fitted with a (removable) expansion unit, in which there is an installed INTEXT ROM.
If anyone is interested in buying it, I would be happy to hear from them by e-mail: any sensible offer will be considered, but you must remember the cost of shipping from Poland, and of course I will need payment up front (sorry, but you know it makes sense). Nice little machine, but I am anxious for it to go to a good home.
I also have an FX80 printer which was bought to work with it, including both RS232 and parallel interface boards, leads, and several books. Same conditions apply - it is quite small, but heavy!

I noticed that someone was looking for a power unit for the HX20 laptop. Easy to substitute, it's 6VDC out at 600mA, to a coaxial power plug with the negative line to the centre.

Your page on the HX20 omitted the fact that it could be fitted with an expansion module (on the left-hand side), and the tape unit could be replaced with a plug-in ROM. You quote the O/S as being Basic, actually it was a hex thing called Monitor ... how do I know? I was one of the original salesmen, and my machine's working here now.
You also commented on the small screen ... it is a 'virtual screen', actually very large if you steer round it with the direction keys ... takes 5 minutes to get used to this.

I have found my old Intertec Superbrain (1980 vintage) lying unused for 20+ years under a dust cover (& scores of old floppies). Plugged it in - screen seems 'live' - but no message appears ('Insert disc in Drive A' or something like that), and system disc doesn't seem to work. What do I need to do to get my old friend working again????

Hi,
I have some information on an old floppy that I'd like to access. It was originally done on a Macintosh SE. Our SE is long dead. I borrowed an old Mac 5200 but it seems to have died as well. Does anyone out there have any suggestions or an old working MAC that I can purchase (cheap) to access my disk?
Thanks

Your initial comment on the IBM 5100 says it was the first "self contained" computer. Actually we analyzed the HP 9830, the Wang 2200 and the AAPL 4000 (a small Toronto company, long ago defunct) while we were designing the 5100. So there were at least those three. The HP and Wang used Basic. The AAPL used APL. I think all of them fit into 4k if you can beleive that.

Hey guys: for the Atari 520ST in 1985 you wrote
"In addition to the 520ST, Atari release the 1040ST, with built-in floppy drive, and 1Meg of RAM (the 520ST has 512K)."
I think Atari don't call her 1040ST but 1040STF (F for built-in floppy). I'm no expert, but i think you have to check.
Anyone interested in a original bill of a Atari 1040STF including monitor SM124 from "Kaufhof", Germany on 30.03.1987 about DM 1.498 (German Mark/something about 800 Euro now). My whole pocket-money of the years 1985-1987.

I have a TI 99/4a with the complete packaging including the "Beginners Basic" step-by-step guide and the video module thing with an adapter for the vhf(it will plug into any tv).
I also own an A2000 with 1 3" floppy drive, 1 50mb hard drive, and 1 5.25" floppy drive (all three are internal). The computer contains several expansion cards and I believe expanded ram. I never got around to checkin it out. There are several acessories including the matching monitor, external 3" floppy drive, keyboard, mouse, joystick (works with atari and sega as well). I have alot of programs for the amiga from music creators to DCTV. I also have a bunch of games and a program for xp and one for amos to transfer files between the amiga and pc. Thats how i got the games lol. I dont have the cable available as I had just used 5 different cables spnning 24 feet to connect the two computers,3 of which were needed for something else.

In your blurb about the Altair 8800, you only mention Gates and Allen as having written Altair BASIC. Monte Davidoff wrote all the floating-point routines for 4K BASIC which were also used in all the subsequent versions of Altair as well as most Microsoft BASICs. Davidoff's contribution was not an insignificant one!

Having sold many Otrona Atache systems to JPL Pasadena, I can add:
Otrona was the first PC to pirate IBM's BASIC ROM, thus proclaiming "100% IBM Compatibility". Up to then 99% was the norm.
The acid test for compatibility was "Flight Simulator", and Otrona ran it great.
IBM sued Otrona, which sparked their demise.

In Sep 1974, I began developing the editor, assembler and system monitor sold with the 1st Altair 8800 systems. I had a software contract with Ed Roberts that preceded the search for someone doing BASIC (Gates and Allen). Being a Captain in the AF I moved on to manage development of the Peacekeeper Guidance and Control System after 1976.
If you're interested in this history, I'd be willing to spend some time documenting memories of those days.

hey sysop, what about the NEC APC, one of the few PC-type machines with an 8" disk drive (possibly only one that came built in). Why not one of them? There was also the APC III, which was more conventional (beige box) that STILL wasn't a compatible, unless you added the SLE (Software Library Expander) board, which gave you like 80% compatibility.
Another neato was the NCR PC4. It's a beauty. I have 3 mono versions in various states of demolition LOL.

I'm wondering why you don't have any Acorn/BBC computers listed? They started out with system1 etc. Then with the Acorn Atom as the first 'real' microcomputer they got the contract with the BBC resulting in the BBC model A and B (later other versions followed). Much later Acorn developed their own CPU (ARM) which is another story all together...

After scroll across some previous comments...perhaps it is an IBM PS/2 that I have in storage...but I really thought it is a PS/1. I will be removing it from storage to verify this, even if just for my own confirmation...I do know the package included an IBM keyboard, perhaps it is an original...intend to look in to this a.s.a.p.

I initially came across this site seeking info &/or answers regarding sources that accept used, ill-functioning keyboards and printers for parts.
However, now exposed to your site, I was wondering whether a top condition (last time I checked) IBM PS/1 PC including accessories/manuals etc. would be considered an exception (since I'm pretty sure it is a 1990) to what are now desired collectables.
If you have any interest, questions, or even know anyone that may want the above mentioned Lexmark All in One printers (have 3 from 2004-06) &/or various keyboard brands (2004-2006) for parts... please do not hesitiate to email. Thankyou.
I am aware that the above mentioned could be donated, however, I was hoping for the slim chance that said could possibly be exchanged for credit &/or sold for parts. Due to medical circumstances, I am in a situation of finacial need, so any means
of incurring funds (no matter the amount)
I must try and utilize before I can give these things to charity.
FYI: IBM PS/1 PC & related equipment is currently in storage. Although accessing the PC wouldn't be an issue, it will require a bit of effort, so please only.

I just had a question about the Commodore SX-64 photos on this site. A guy just sold me an SX-64 on eBay which he supposedly took back from an IT museum. The machine he sent was far from mint condition as he stated and went as far as to say the photos in his auction page at http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=330166998357 were of his unit. They happen to be the same photos that are on your site. Are the pictures yours and he is just full of crap?
Now he is saying that mint is a "subjective" term and that the computer was mint to him. Since I speak English I kind of go by the English definition of the term , indicating that mint means perfect condition as shown here http://www.usingenglish.com/reference/idioms/mint+condition.html
Sysop says: Yup, my photos of my computer. Mint should mean "like new".

Owned three computer stores 82-85 sold 2000+ Kaypros. I bundled the Kaypro II with a Silver Reed daisy wheel printer, word processor, spreadsheet and rudimentary database manager. Offered free classes on CPM, WP, spreadsheet and DB. Also Statistic package I wrote. Kaypro had the highest MTBF of all the computers we sold. Others we sold, IBM PC clones, not on your site are the Eagle and Chamillion. If your computer was malfunctioning bring it in and 15 minutes later you were walking out with another computer while yours was being repaired. Kaypro allowed us to do repairs onsite, not so lucky with the others.

Brought back a lot of memories.
Only gripe is that it said OSI, not Ohio Scientific, and you only have the challenger 4. A real collector would have had the C3A which has a 8080A, 6800, and 6502 cpus to bootstrap from.
And on your TI, you should have had the expansion chassis that was optional.

Interesting site to say the least, from someone that "grew up" on Tandy TRS-80 type gear!
But stuff is missing - big time!!
What is conspicuously missing you ask?
(Great question I might add!)
(1) Tandy 10
(2) TRS-80 Model 16
(3) TRS-80 Model 4
(4) TRS-80 Model 4P
Why have they been ignored?
As a friend likes to say, this is one of those cases when we must figure out if, "it's ignorance or arrogance!!"
And what kind of TRS-80 aficionado would I be if I didn't ask the whereabouts of Randy Cook?

I just found this website...it's incredible!
The first computer I ever used was the Commodore PET. This was the computers our local school started with. Recently, I went there and bought one for $1 complete with tape drive. Still works and some of the program cassettes were included.
The first computer I got (and still have) is the Timex Sinclair 1000, although I couldn't really do much with it. It sits in a case in my closet now, only to be brought out occassionally.
I found an Apple IIc at our local thrift store for $3. It came with all books and software plus AtariWriter and Advantage Computing Apple Best 100 disks. Came with 9" b&w monitor. I'm currently on the lookout for a color monitor. The monitor port on the computer can actually be connected to any video input on TVs or VCRs.
Lastly, I have an Atari 800, fully loaded. I created a game program on it and have submitted it to be published through www.atarisales.com. If you are looking for anything Atari, check them out. He also has some Apple, Commodore & old IBM PC programs as well.
This is by far the best place to find information on old PCs. These are the true PCs. I could use some game programs for my Apple IIc and if anyone out there knows where I might could find some (excluding ebay), please, drop me a line.
Thankx!

I've got a Sinclair ZX Spectrum+ (48K monster that was released in 1982 I think) that should still be functional.
I've also got an Eagle Jr. (released by Usha computers in India) which is an Apple IIe clone - it's probably pretty rare given the fact that very few people who knew anything about computers in the early 80s in India could actually afford such stuff.
And if I really dig hard, I'd be able to pull up an Epson laptop that I used to take to school in 1985.

I'm a little surprised there's no mention of the IBM PS/2 here. This was IBM's effort to staunch the proliferation of IBM clones. It had a proprietary architecture centered around something they called the "microchannel" and featured a DOS replacement called OS/2; the idea was that people would flock to the new machine and put the clones out of business.
Unfortunately for IBM nobody wanted to migrate to the new platform - they had become comfortable in the DOS world; also I seem to recall that many of the DOS-based apps wouldn't run on the PS/2. IBM thought they could apply the same strong-arm tactics they used in the mainframe arena to force people to upgrade; unfortunately for them the PC community couldn't be intimidated so easily. A spectacular bust - I think IBM had to write-down a couple hundred million dollars.

I am looking to get (purchase) some 12 inch floppy disks for use in teaching a computer course. I have all the other sizes and medias, but not these. The disks can be non-readable, as long as they are cosmetically good. Thanks.

You have quite a collection but are missing a truly incredible computer series: Epson QX-10, then the QX-16. The TPM software and VALDOCS along with the HASCI keyboard were generations ahead. I've always said if they had been 9 months slower on the start they would have been on the 8088 instead of Z-80 and would have competed evenly or beat MS-DOS to the punch. I still have boxes and boxes of systems, software, repair manuals, addon drives, monitors (color), ram drives, and voice. All from 1983-1986 time frame and it was WYSIWYG long before windows. It even had built in INTEGRATED CAD besides the other integrated modules for graphics, spreadsheets, database, and word processor. Would love to find a museum who could do it justice before I finally send the boxes to the dump. Ironically, the newer windows keyboards finally have words for programmed functions--Epson/Rising Star trademarked HASCI way back then and the STOP key stopped things, the index key indexed all the documents and could retrieve 256 character descriptive names, Print called up the print routines that could use the Index, and yes, HELP called up help in any of the software! Bad business practices and being on the Z-80 killed it not the implementation of the brilliant ideas. The two little portable Epson's you have benefitted from the QX family but were nothing compared to the beautiful systems of the QX line.

I remember, when I was in Junior High and High school, drooling over the laser 128 Apple IIe compatible. And after acquiring one used going to the apple store and getting a WYSIWYG word processor for it. But I still preferred my appleworks when I got to college in 1990. When I got to college I was introduced to HP Apollo workstations. They ran on the motorola 68030 chip and were on the internet. I was on campus using these machines for some of the first web pages. Before the web the great lure of these machines was using gopher, archie and ftp to find and retrieve games, graphics and other files from the internet. You Should have a laser 128 apple and they also made an IBM compatible. The place I saw these at was sears around 1986 or so.

I have a number of PolyMorphic 8813 and 8810 computers in various states of disrepair -- some work, I think, though none have been turned on in years.
The PolyMorphic computers were among the best in capabilities, though the software availability wasn't very good. The system was designed by some folks who had been at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) and was excellent. I doubt that more than 6 or 7 thousand 8813s were built, as they were expensive. They were designed for businesses and were rugged and reliable.
My wife says I have to get rid of all but one (my original 1978 system). If there's any interest, contact me soon! 9Aug07

I have an old Spectravideo MSX computer with build in floppy disk drive in the garage. Not sure whether it still works. It is in one piece and worked the last time I used it, sometime in the mid nineties if I remember correctly. I am keeping it for sentimental reasons but I might just get myself to give it up to a good and caring home.

My first computer was an IBM-compatible by new supplier PCs UNLIMITED in 1987. Boy, I was proud of that machine! Old-timers may recognize the name of the company as what Michael Dell was using before he changed it to simply, "Dell". So it's a pre-Dell Dell!
I've hung onto it - it's still in the garage, though I think no longer operable.
I've wondered if there's some kind of museum that would want one for historical purposes. Any help?

I believe there is an error in the writeup for the Sinclair ZX-81. They did not have the same CPU as the ZX-80. The ZX-80 used an Intel 4004 (a 4-bit CPU), while the ZX-81 used the Zilog Z-80 (an 8-bit CPU).

If case nobody mentioned already, your description of IIc in Franklin Ace 500 is incorrect. The only computer with built-in Integer BASIC is the original Apple II WITHOUT Auto Start ROM upgrade. All other Apple II series loads Integer BASIC into language card area (mapped to upper range of the 64k RAM) off DOS 3.3 disk.

The Texas Instruments 99/4A home computer was fairly popular in the 80s. You may remember Bill Cosby in all of the TV ads. Might you have one in the attic, basement, garage or closet? I am VERY interested in obtaining any items related to this particular computer. So, if you happen to have anything - command cartridges (games and application program software), books, accessories, cords, peripheral expansion box, joysticks, or the computer itself, please respond. I can promptly pickup at your convenience! Thanks ahead of time! I am located in Richmond, VA and will pay shipping in the USA only.

Victor had 1 or 2 1.2mb floppies not 800mb

Victor 900 and Vicki
I can't believe there is little mention of these 2 popular machines, before the IBM PC.Well the Victor 900 was popular, I sold quite a few. I still have an original HD version on the shelf, although it was upgraded from the original 10mb HD to a 20mb HD (Who could posibly use that much HD space)
The Vicki was Victor's portable that came out about the same time as the IBM PC. I still have one of these too. Dual 800mb floppies and 8086 processor.

The first computer I ever used was a TRS-80 model III. The first I ever owned was an Intertec Superbrain II. Boy, I thought I was uptown with that thing. It provided me with great lessons on how computers work.
