Link: N/AI noticed there is no mention or links for the venerable Heathkit H-89 (which went head-to-head with the TRS-80).
If anyone has some old pictures or information on it, I'd love to see it. That system was my "first love" and got me started on my career in computers.
My system had 64K bytes of RAM (which included an 8K RAM ungrade for $150). It used hard-sectored 5 1/4" floopy disks with a capacity of 100K bytes. The hardware included dual Z-80 microprocessors. One for computing, the other to drive the integrated VT-52 compatible display.
Even in those days, I could "dual-boot" either HDOS (Heathkit proprietary OS) or CP/M (IBMs mainframe "Control Program" except for minicomputers). The main reason for CP/M was to run the killer application of the time: Visicalc!
Lots of good memories.

This looks like a nice site.... I just have a nitpicky thing about your Apple IIgs section....
That picture's lacking something.... the screen image pasted on it... the border is missing... The IIgs had a border which could be set to 16 different colors. If you really wanted to make it look right you'd have to use an emulator that can display the border area around the picture... then just assume that half the width of the border is not onscreen.
Sysop says: I fixed it a little...

Win99/4A version 3.004
For those of you that packed your TI 99/4A & GENEVE 9640 away long ago, recently Cory Burr wrote Win99/4A version 3.004, an EXCELLENT simulator of the TI 99/4A with full speech capabilities, sound capabilities, cassette tape simulation, 3 resident disk drives, 3 resident ram disks, and very good module compatibility. You can now get back to writing programs with the TI Extended Basic Cartridge(s) and writing programs in Basic using the Super Cartridge and the Mini Memory Cartridge; using the 'Funnel Web' quasi operating system and using the good educational & game modules for your nieces, nephews, and other children; all this on the PC.
Just go to on the http address below. It will take you directly to where the file is located and can be downloaded.
http://www.99er.net/download/details.php?file=87
Over 200 Cartridges (Modules) in file format are available for download for Win994a. Just go to on the http address below. It will take you directly to where the files are located and can be downloaded.
http://www.99er.net/download/files.php?cat=15
Download and uncompress the cartridge(s) item. This may take a little while since the file is roughly 27meg. Uncompress the contents of this file into the "carts" directory under the "Win994a" folder of your hard disk. This will make all 200+ carts available to Win994a next time you start it up. Enjoy.
Try it!
The site listed below has PC archives of "almost" every PC99 version [a commercial emulator] of all the good TI99/4A programs known to mankind!
Just download the archives and run them at your leisure.
You can then convert the .DSK to V9 [standard freeware format] files with the PC992V9 program available at:
ftp://ftp.whtech.com/v9t9/Convert%20PC99%20disks%20to%20V9T9/
then rename .V9 files to .TIDisk [the Win994a file format suffix] files from the command prompt in DOS.

Link: N/AFound the web site by accident when i put a query into goole search engine.I have no particular interest in computers but , thought i might share this with you.Today Saturday JUNE 18 2005, I was clearing out my grandmothers garage , and had need to visit the local recycling centre or Trash Dump as some may call it, on the second visit i couldn,t beleive my eyes when on the second visit of the day , what should i see sitting at the front of the skip or dumpster as you may know it , but a Commodore 2001 series computer beige looking thing , with a built in monitor and an old cassette tape drive , still with a cassette in it.
I wish i had a camera on me to take a photo to share but alas did not .
I have never seen anything like it and it brought memories back of playing the old Granstand game console and the tennis game just like 2 lines and a dot for the ball. Memories of the good old days when life was much simpler
Any way thats all i wanted to say , thanks for taking the time to read this .

Albi

Link: http://sorry don't quite get what this one means!? :-|This is kind of a help I need as well as maybe I'd be able to help you:
1stly though: You've got a nice website here doing great justice to its purpose. Congratz.
I just checked your Sony 8-bit computers section, and there was no mention of a system I worked with in mid-`80s: SONY SMC70-GP (Graphics Producer) multimedia system.
Well, maybe I checked the wrong place: your 8bit home computers and that's why I couldn't find any info regarding the system I was hoping to find on your site.
Anyway, that system used a Z80 processor and came with a 4096 color genlock built-in, although it wasn't capable of yielding more than 16 colors on its Grapnics Editor program.
If you don't already have it on your list, I can provide you with more information, but sorry, no pictures.
Regards,
SP

Sysop says: The output of the Atari 400 and 800 is RF. You need to hook it up to the antenna input of your TV, then select channel 3 or 4. You probably want an "RCA to F adapter", like this. Otherwise, just cut the connector off and strip the wire if you don't mind.

I once wrote a payroll program for the trucking company my wife worked for using the Commodore sx64 they owned. It did everything but the SSI which had to be entered from the chart. It was great fun making a computer do something useful. I also wrote and used a data entry program for my Commodore 64 that I used to do hardcopies of incident reports at my fire station long before computers were being used anywhere in the department. Your site brings back some fond memories and many frustrations associated with making a computer work for me.

Also, do you know of any packaging that encloses a chip, wherein the chip is mounted to a printed circuit that extends outside of the package?
Sysop says: Many older computers had something similar to memory cards. The Sol-20 (1976) had a personality module,
the Sorcerer (1978) had a cartridge for running programs, as did most game systems.
The Galivan (1983) had plug-in capsules of battery-backed RAM.
The Atari Portfolio (1989) comes the closest to what I would call a memory stick.

I built all the systems for sale; to save money, the boss, Dan Goodman IIRC, bought kits, and I built them. It was a summer HS job for me. But back to the computer you are missing... I forget its name, but it was from Motorola, a small metal bocks (my 'ecks' just died), with eight data switches, a load, and a run switch. It was white, and ran off an eternal supply. Based on the 6800 or 6802 (00 IIRC), and had about 256bytes (2 times 2101 or 5101 SRAM). That's all I remember about it. It retailed for about $200.

Link: N/AI am interested in the Grundy NewBrain AD Computer (c)1982 and have a number of running machines. There is a NewBrain Emulator v2.54 that runs on a modern PC which was written in Delphi. The NB Emulator runs NewBrain Basic and also CP/M Operating System. Check out the following websites for info on the NB.

The NewBrain was originally designed by Clive Sinclear who sold it on the Grundy Business Machines. Grundy went bankrupt in 1982 hence the rearity of the machine.

A couple you are missing from the mid eighties - certainly in the UK - were the Oric 1 and the Oric Atmos - These were released around the same time/era as the ZX Spectrum, Atari 800 and Commodore 64...

Link: N/AFor a class assignment, I need to write about "the first mass market personal computer." However, after doing research, I cannot seem to find a consensus about which computer that is. My professor also describes the computer in this way: "Prior to IBM's entry into the personal computer market in 1981, the personal computer industry was already booming. In the mid-1970's however personal computers were sold to hobbyists in kit form that required assembly. Who marketed the first mass market personal computer, i.e. widely adopted and pre-assembled?" Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Sysop says: The Altair is generally accepted as the first mass-marketed computer, but still a kit mostly for hobbyists. The IMSAI could be purchased pre-assembled, and was very popular. Many businesses used these computers and others, but these systems were definitely not "user friendly".
As you can see in the list to the left, there were dozens of business-capable computers well before the IBM PC (1981).
It's hard to say which was the first widely adopted - the Apple II, TRS-80, Commodore and Atari computers each sold millions and millions of systems - very widely adopted indeed!
